Position Summary
The Night Shift Registered Nurse provides high‑quality, patient‑centered nursing care while serving as a key clinical resource during overnight hours. This position prioritizes independent judgment, teamwork, and strong communication skills, with on‑the‑job support for new graduates building confidence and experience.
Night shift nurses oversee patient care, collaborate with providers and care teams, support LPNs and Nursing Unit Assistants, and respond promptly to any changes in patient condition.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Excellence
- Assess patient conditions, identify nursing needs, and participate in developing and evaluating individualized care plans
- Administer medications and perform treatments based on provider orders
- Monitor and respond to patient changes throughout the night
- Assist physicians during procedures within RN scope
- Provide support in emergencies and follow required protocols
- Offer patient and family education as appropriate to overnight workflow
Night Shift Leadership & Support
- Serve as a resource and support to LPNs and Nursing Unit Assistants
- Ensure continuity of care between evening and morning handoffs
- Maintain calm, efficient, and effective care delivery with limited onsite leadership
- Assist new or less‑experienced team members as needed
Collaboration, Documentation & Professionalism
- Communicate effectively with the care team during night hours
- Document care accurately and promptly in patient records
- Ensure safe use of equipment, supplies, and resources
- Assist with transfers, procedures, and coordination with other departments
- Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and commitment to quality care
Qualifications
Required
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (new grads and soon‑to‑graduate students are encouraged to apply)
- Current Iowa RN license or eligibility for licensure
- BLS certification
- Ability to complete ACLS and PALS within established timeframes
- Ability to work night shift on a consistent basis
- Basic computer and documentation skills
Preferred
- Prior nursing experience in acute care, long‑term care, or specialty areas
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Willingness to float to additional departments after training
