Position Summary

The New Graduate RN provides compassionate, high‑quality nursing care under the guidance and support of experienced nursing leaders. This role allows new nurses to build confidence in assessment skills, patient care planning, communication, and clinical judgment. You will work closely with interdisciplinary team members, participate in hands‑on care, and learn to provide safe, effective nursing care for patients of all ages.

Key Responsibilities

Foundational Nursing Practice

  • Assess patient conditions, identify care needs, and participate in goal‑setting for individualized care
  • Communicate observations, concerns, and patient responses to providers and nursing leadership
  • Administer medications and provide treatments under RN licensure
  • Assist physicians during procedures within RN scope
  • Respond to patient emergencies with support from experienced staff
  • Build competence in patient teaching, discharge planning, and care coordination

Team-Based Support

  • Collaborate with LPNs, Nursing Unit Assistants, and interdisciplinary partners
  • Participate in the orientation process with guided skill-building
  • Assist team members with patient care tasks as needed
  • Engage in unit meetings, learning opportunities, and quality improvement efforts

Professional Growth & Accountability

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation
  • Utilize equipment safely and ensure supplies are used responsibly
  • Complete necessary competencies and ongoing educational requirements
  • Adapt positively to changes in technology, equipment, and processes
  • Learn to float to additional clinical areas when appropriate (OB, ER, SDS)
  • Participate in ambulance transfer orientation when needed

Qualifications

Required

  • Current nursing student nearing graduation or recent graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Eligibility for Iowa RN licensure
  • BLS certification (or ability to obtain before orientation)
  • Willingness to complete ACLS and PALS shortly after hire
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Basic computer and documentation skills

Preferred (but not required for new grads)

  • Interest in OB, Telemetry, or specialty areas
  • Comfort in learning new clinical skills and processes
