Position Summary

Under the direction of the EMS Director, the EMT / AEMT / Paramedic – ED Tech provides out‑of‑hospital emergency care according to established protocols and assists nursing staff with patient care tasks within the Emergency Department. This role supports the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients while maintaining high standards of safety, professionalism, and compassion.


Key Responsibilities

Emergency Medical Services

  • Provide emergency and non‑emergency out‑of‑hospital care following protocols and medical director guidelines 
  • Respond to all calls during shifts or on‑call periods, ensuring safe and timely transport
  • Complete vehicle inspections, cleaning, restocking, and maintenance as assigned 
  • Participate as a member of the hospital's HAZMAT and TB transport teams
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in electronic/paper medical records
  • Stay informed on EMS advancements and participate in education or training sessions

Emergency Department Support

  • Assist RNs and Physicians with patient care tasks within scope and training 
  • Set up for procedures including suturing, casting, chest tubes, ENT procedures, and catheterization
  • Transport, lift, position, and assist patients with mobility, dressing, and belongings
  • Answer call lights, assess needs within scope, and notify nursing staff of concerns
  • Perform routine tasks including vital signs, wound care, monitoring setup, I&O documentation, and general patient support [EMT-ED Tech 2019 | Word]
  • With additional training: perform EKGs, blood glucose checks, and administer medications allowed under EMS protocols
  • Support sterile technique, infection prevention measures, and fall‑prevention best practices

Customer Service & Teamwork

  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, families, and staff
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adapt to evolving healthcare practices
  • Demonstrate teamwork and professionalism, including assisting PRN staff or students

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current Iowa EMT certification (AEMT or Paramedic also accepted) 
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, or on‑call
  • Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the position, including lifting, bending, and patient transport

Preferred:

  • 1–2 years field experience as an EMT
  • ACLS, PALS, PHTLS completion (or ability to obtain within 1 year)
  • Basic Life Support Instructor credentials
