Job Summary

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) / Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) supports both clinical and clerical functions within the nursing unit under the direction and supervision of an RN or LPN. This role provides essential bedside care, assists with activities of daily living (ADLs), answers call lights and phones, supports chart management, and performs unit-based clerical tasks when clinical needs are met. The PCA/CNA helps streamline workflow for nursing staff, improving patient flow and overall satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide bedside nursing care as delegated by the RN or LPN.
  • Record and deliver messages promptly and accurately.
  • Answer telephones and call lights courteously and efficiently.
  • Assemble and maintain patient charts, ensuring accuracy and correct order.
  • Assist with patient admissions and discharges.
  • Prepare next-day assignment sheets for all shifts.
  • Assist patients with ordered activity and mobility.
  • Obtain TPR and BP at 1600/PRN and report to nursing staff.
  • Participate in unit meetings and ongoing team activities.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the Medicare Compliance Act.
  • Document patient information in electronic and/or paper records accurately and promptly.
  • Maintain logins and passwords for required software systems.
  • Clean and maintain computer and equipment surfaces; identify issues using appropriate channels.
  • Order supplies, linen, and complete weekly NUA checklist.
  • Assemble blank charts and conduct open/closed chart reviews.
  • Willingly learn and assist with charging and billing tasks.
  • Perform screening for individuals entering the hospital and complete required paperwork.
  • Assist the Emergency Department with stocking, room turnover, and support tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments to support patient flow.
  • Carry out additional reasonable duties as delegated.
  • Demonstrate strong infection control knowledge and proper cleaning techniques.

  • Perform calmly and accurately in crisis or emergency situations.
  • Use time efficiently and support overall team performance.
  • Complete assigned tasks reliably and professionally.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Position Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Active Iowa Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required.
  • Completion of Dependent/Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter training within 6 months of hire; renewed every 3 years.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Experience

  • Entry-level; no prior experience required.

  • Excellent organization and time‑management skills.
  • Comfortable with Excel, Word, and basic computer applications.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours to meet patient and unit needs.
